The German Congress of Ophthalmic Surgeons was the largest face-to-face meeting in three years with 5,400 delegates. Four of the seven possible "Conference Best Paper Awards" went to Heidelberg researchers. Dr. Gerd U Auffarth received the first ever Platinum Medal to be awarded by DOC.

ESCRS President presented the First Prize to Daniel Chang MD, USA. The Second prize went to Grzegorz Łabuz from The Apple Lab in Heidelberg. The TECNIS Synergy IOL maintained excellent continuous vision up to 33cm with distance vision better than 1.0 (20/20)

The latest paper from the David J Apple Lab has been accepted for future publication in the influential American Journal of Ophthalmology. In vitro analysis confirmed Symfony’s wavelength dependence: performance was improved at a far distance but was worse at intermediate and near distances. Although the red filter did not improve distance vision, it caused visual deterioration at the near distance.

Pars Plana Vitrectomy (PPV) – with instillation of gas into a pseudophakic eye with an acrylic hydrophilic lens – seems to increase the risk for secondary calcification irrespective of the IOL manufacturer. In these cases, IOL exchange is the only treatment option available. Albert Galand was born 29 October 1938 in Woluwe-Saint-Lambert (Brussels) and died 22 December 2015 in Liege, Belgium. He was a pioneer in capsular IOL design and intra-capsular techniques. His inventions in lens design in the 1990s were quickly picked up by European companies.

In October the main laboratory room of the Apple Lab was refurbished. The room is now customised to carry out our main work on measuring and examining intraocular lenses. The Leader of the laboratory, Dr Patrick Merz welcomed the change. Later this year we will complete the project by installing more equipment in the lab.

Jan Worst was a pioneer of intraocular lens design and co-founder of the Ophtec IOL-manufacturing company. He died in Groningen in The Netherlands on 25th September 2015. He was one of the pioneers in IOL Development and a most influential innovator.

Dr Mary Safwat Aziz Attia won the award for ‘Best Paper of the Session’ in the Scientific Sessions on Multifocal IOLs. The award was made at the 29th annual meeting of the German-speaking Society of Intraocular Lens Implantation, Interventional and Refractive Surgery. Dr Attia has been carrying out research in the Heidelberg Eye Department and the Apple Lab since June 2013.
