Dr. med. Hyeck Soo Son

Dresden, Germany 17th February 2018: At the 32nd annual meeting of the German-speaking Society of Intraocular Lens Implantation, Interventional and Refractive Surgery (DGII)* the award for Best Paper of the Session on Intraocular Lenses went to Dr. med. Hyeck Soo Son, Assistant Doctor in the University of Heidelberg Eye Clinic.

Dr Son’s paper “Simulation und Auswertung photischer Phänomene bei verschiedenen IOL Modellen” (Simulation and analysis of photic phenomena in different IOL models) reported on research carried out in the David J Apple International Laboratory for Ocular Pathology. Since 2014, Dr. Son has been an instructor in cataract surgery using the Eyesi® Surgical virtual reality simulator for intraocular surgery training as well as conducting research on IOLs, OVDs and injector at the Apple Lab.

Dr Patrick R Merz

In the DGII’s Scientific Sessions on IOL Pathology, the Best Paper went to another researcher at the Apple Lab. Dr. rer. nat. Patrick Merz was awarded for his presentation on Optische Reinheit verschiedener hydrophober acrylat-lntraokularlinsen (The Optical Purity of Various hydrophobic acrylic Intraocular Lenses.) Dr Merz, a research biotechnologist, joined the Apple Lab in May 2015.
