New Look for the Lab

In October the main laboratory room of the Apple Lab was refurbished. The room is now customised to carry out our main work on measuring and examining intraocular lenses. The Leader of the laboratory, Dr Patrick Merz welcomed the change. Later this year we will complete the project by installing more equipment in the lab.

Jan Worst 1928 to 2015

Jan Worst was a pioneer of intraocular lens design and co-founder of the Ophtec IOL-manufacturing company. He died in Groningen in The Netherlands on 25th September 2015. He was one of the pioneers in IOL Development and a most influential innovator.

Patrick Merz is a research biotechnologist with six years of experience in managing laboratory facilities both in university and in private laboratories. Dr Merz will lead the research program, manage our facility and organise resources. He is the Laboratory Leader of the David J Apple International Laboratory for Ocular Pathology.

Opacification after rTPA

Intraocular Lens Opacification following Intracameral Injection of Recombinant Tissue Plasminogen Activator to Treat Inflammatory Membranes after Cataract Surgery. The research group at the David J Apple International Laboratory for Ocular Pathology published a research paper in the Journal of Ophthalmology.

DGII Award for Mary Attia

Dr Mary Safwat Aziz Attia won the award for ‘Best Paper of the Session’ in the Scientific Sessions on Multifocal IOLs. The award was made at the 29th annual meeting of the German-speaking Society of Intraocular Lens Implantation, Interventional and Refractive Surgery. Dr Attia has been carrying out research in the Heidelberg Eye Department and the Apple Lab since June 2013.

Feast for Eye and Ear

Prof. Gerd Auffarth, Head of the DJApple Lab and Chairman of the University Clinic Eye Department drew a record audience of 730 to his “Medicine in the Evening’ lecture on ophthalmology. The lectures are sponsored by the local Heidelberg newspaper **Rhein Neckar Zeitung**.

The Ridleys visit the Lab

Nicholas and Lauretta Ridley visited the David J Apple Laboratory and met with some of the staff and directors of the laboratory. Nicholas had an attempt at cataract surgery using the laboratory’s phaco simulator and he remarked afterwards “he had not inherited his father's surgical dexterity!’

Dr. Ramin Khoramnia MD FEBO won Runner-Up prize in the category, Cataract Complications, with the film ‘CSI: Heidelberg-IOL Analysis’ The film was made under the supervision of Prof Gerd Auffarth. It reports research work that Dr KhorAmnia and his colleagues at the Apple Lab have done in analysing intraocular lenses.

Better vision for AMD patients.

Oculentis Lentis Mplus High Add IOL is a hydrophobic acrylic biconvex IOL which has a +8 D sector-shaped near addition resulting in 6 D of near correction at the spectacle plane and 1.5 times magnifying power. “It provides image magnification for near — quite useful for AMD patients who normally have to rely on low vision reading aids such as magnifying glasses or electronic reading desks,” Prof. Gerd U.

Congratulations, Ramin!

Ramin Khoramnia,** Research Fellow from The Apple Lab came second overall in the European Board of Ophthalmology’s 2013 classification of 440 examination candidates. It is very important for European doctors to have a European degree these days, because European thinking is becoming more and more important.
