Heidelberg, 30 June 2026. I recently awarded two visiting research professors for their significant contributions to our Eye Department and the David J. Apple® Centre for Vision Research. As they prepare to return home next month in July, we extend our gratitude for their hard work and wish them success in their future careers.
Dr Kyungmin Koh, Seoul, South Korea.

Prof. Auffarth presents the award to Dr Koh.
Dr Koh, MD, PhD, MBA is visiting us from Kim’s Eye Hospital at Konyang University College of Medicine in Nonsan, South Korea. He joined us on August 19, 2025 in the capacity of Visiting Research Professor in the field of Cornea, Optics, and Intraocular Lenses at the David J. Apple® International Laboratory for Ocular Pathology, and working with us in the Department of Ophthalmology, of Ruprecht-Karis University of Heidelberg Hospital.
Prof. Koh has been conducting research in the field of presbyopia correcting IOLs, linking the optical performance of IOLs with visual function through the evaluation of extensive clinical data. His work here has led to several joint projects and the following publications.
- Son HS, Kim SY, Koh K, Auffarth GU, Łabuz G. Comparative visual and refractive analysis of two enhanced monofocal intraocular lenses. BMC Ophthalmol. 2026 Jan 16;26(1):72. doi: 10.1186/s12886-025-04598-4. PMID: 41545836; PMCID: PMC12892661.
- Son HS, Na DG, Koh K, Auffarth GU, Łabuz G. Visual function comparison of a non-diffractive extended depth-of-focus and an enhanced monofocal intraocular lens sharing the same platform. Sci Rep. 2026 May 13. doi: 10.1038/s41598-026-52866-0. Epub ahead of print. PMID: 42128901.
It was great to work with you and we look forward to future cooperation

Prof Auffarth, Dr Koh and Dr Łabuz

Dr Peng Gao, Shanghai, China.
Peng Gao, MID, PhD is the Associate Chief Physician at the Department of Ophthalmology of the Shanghai Tenth People’s Hospital which is affiliated to Tongji University. Dr Peng came to Heidelberg and has worked here since April this year as Visiting Research Professor in the field of Cornea, Optics, and Intraocular Lenses at the David J. Apple® International Laboratory for Ocular Pathology, and working with us in the Department of Ophthalmology, of Ruprecht-Karis University of Heidelberg Hospital.
During his time here, Peng Gao focused on research into two photon mediated vision, investigating how this process is influenced by ocular optical aberrations. Additionally, he worked on developing a novel intraocular lens (IOL) simulator and testing IOL optical quality, aiming to gain deeper insight into the differences between existing options and thereby provide a more scientific basis for patient selection.
It was a pleasure to work with you and we are looking forward to further cooperation
