New IOL material - xPIB

Researchers have developed a novel intraocular lens (IOL) made of crosslinked polyisobutylene (xPIB), which showed promising results in terms of material quality and optical performance. The Eyedeal lens demonstrated lower glistening density and a higher contact angle compared to the AcrySof lens, a widely used control. The study suggests that xPIB could be a suitable material for IOLs, with clinical trials already underway in China and planned for Europe.

CSI: Heidelberg. Episode 4 DMEK with EndoArt®

The EndoArt, an artificial endothelial replacement membrane, has shown promising results in treating chronic corneal edema. This dome-shaped, 50-μm thick implant is made of a flexible, hydrophilic acrylic material and is designed to replace the diseased endothelium. It is implanted using the "push through" technique and has been shown to significantly reduce central corneal thickness and improve visual acuity in patients. The device has several advantages over traditional donor tissue, including being off-the-shelf, non-biological, and not requiring immunosuppressive treatment.

A dip into our Archives

Multifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) have advanced significantly, offering improved visual outcomes and spectacle independence after cataract surgery. These lenses divide light into different focuses, enhancing near vision but potentially causing halos, glare, and lower contrast sensitivity. Recent research aims to optimize their optical design, and careful patient selection and surgical technique are crucial for success.
