Heidelberg 06 April 2020. In its April 2020 edition, “The Ophthalmologist” magazine published a “Ranking” of the “100 most influential personalities in ophthalmology worldwide”. This list is updated every two years, since 2014, and once again, Prof. Gerd Auffarth is listed.
The best in ophthalmology
The ranking includes not just eye surgeons but the research scientists and engineers as well as industry leaders who made decisive contributions to the development of ophthalmic devices and pharmaceuticals in recent years.
Eleven from Germany
In the last four lists from 2014 to 2020), a total of 11 people from Germany have been voted a place in the Powerlist, including colleagues from industry, and basic research. Gerd. Auffarth is the only German ophthalmologist who is continuously listed, from 2014 to 2020, in every Powerlist. He already appeared on the first list in 2014, In 2018 he was even ranked second.
Gerd Auffarth
Prof. Auffarth has been Medical Director of Heidelberg University Eye Clinic since 2011, before that he worked as a senior physician at the University Eye Clinic. He is the director of the International Vision Correction Research Center (IVCRC) and the David J. Apple Laboratory for Ocular Pathology, which he has established in the University Eye Clinic and which are recognised worldwide in the field of implant and biomaterial research. As a co-founder of the Lions cornea bank at the Heidelberg University Eye Clinic, he continued to advance human corneal transplant surgery and other innovative research areas at the Heidelberg site. He is a board member of the German- (General Secretary) and the European- Society for Cataract and Refractive Surgery.

The continuous listing of Prof Auffarth confirms he is considered by his peers to be one of the most experienced surgeons in cataract and corneal surgery as well as his international commitment to education, research and development.
