Heidelberg, 14 September 2018. The latest scientific research paper from the research group at the David J Apple Lab has been accepted for publication in the prestigious American Journal of Ophthalmology.

The Kowa IOL had no glistenings.

The research had important conclusions,

We found glistenings in 5 of the 6 IOL models. The Kowa IOL had no glistenings. In those lenses with glistenings only in 20% did the induced light scattering reach levels that have the potential to hinder visual performance. We showed that the glistenings’ morphology differs depending on the IOL model, but the proportional straylight increase with the glistening number holds regardless of those differences.

Although less severe than some years ago, the glistening problem in IOLs persists. IOL manufacturers still need to address the problem through either introduction of new materials or by continuous improvement of the manufacturing process that is used to make lenses in a current material.
