International Vision Correction Research Center
While the Apple Lab concentrates on testing and laboratory research on IOLs and similar devices, the IVCRC is its equivalent in the Heidelberg Eye Department for conducting clinical research on IOLs and other ophthalmic devices as well as pharmaceutical agents.
In 1999 Prof. Gerd Auffarth established the Heidelberg IOL and Refractive Surgery Research Group and this grew to become the IVCRC (International Vision Correction Research Centre), which was certified to DIN EN ISO 9001:2000 in August 2006. Today the IVCRC is re-certified according to DIN EN ISO 9001:2008 and is a member of the Steinbeis Research Association as well as part of the European Research Network.
IVCRC Research interests
The surgical technique to remove the lens of the eye is called phacoemulsification and is mainly performed using ultrasound technology. In different clinical and experimental studies we analyse, improve and develop:
- Surgical phaco-techniques and technologies.
- The use of Femtosecond laser to perform single steps of cataract surgery with the objective to minimize complications, to individualize treatment, and to make it more predictable.
- Ophthalmic viscoelastic devices (OVD) that protect the cellular layers of the eye and especially stabilize the anterior segment of the eye during surgery.
Intraocular lenses (IOLs)
Implantation of intraocular lenses into the eye is routine in modern ophthalmic surgery. IOLs are used in two main ways:
- to replace the natural lens (in cataract or refractive surgery)
- as an addition to the natural lens or to an already implanted IOL (in refractive surgery)
As a standard procedure, monofocal lens implants are used that are able to correct short- or far-sightedness; that means they only produce one focal point. With further developments of intraocular lenses it is now also possible to correct several refractive errors with one lens, e.g. astigmatism and/or presbyopia.
Important areas of our clinical research are:
- Certification of new intraocular lenses (specially for correction of presbyopia)
- Analysis of an IOL’s optical quality
- Calculation of IOL power (biometry)
After implantation of an intraocular lens as an exchange for the natural lens, it is possible that vision decreases again after some time due to an opacification of the posterior lens capsule in which the artificial lens was placed, (not an opacification of the intraocular lens itself). This was a major study area for David Apple during his lifetime and today IVCRC studies the type and frequency of secondary cataract and its possible reduction by mechanical factors or pharmacological preventive approaches.
Training physicians and assistant personnel is an important part of our work. We offer workshops and continuing education for different subject areas in the form of internal and external events.
Ocular surgeries are presented with this virtual-reality surgery simulator (Eyesi). Routine surgeries and complex situations can be trained repeatedly – without risk for doctor and patient.
